Sikh Wedding Photographer Auckland
Anand Karaj specialists. We understand the Laavan, the Gurdwara, and the sanctity of the ceremony.
The Anand Karaj Deserves a Photographer Who Gets It
The Anand Karaj is not a backdrop. It’s the spiritual centre of your wedding day — the four Laavan walked around the Guru Granth Sahib, the hukamnama read by the Granthi, the moment your families witness your union in the presence of Sikhi.
I’m Karan. I’ve shot Anand Karaj ceremonies at Takanini Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib, Papatoetoe, Manukau, and across Auckland. I know the etiquette inside the darbar sahib. I know when to lower the camera. I know when to be invisible. I know that breaking the sanctity of the ceremony for a shot is never worth it.
If you want a photographer who treats the Anand Karaj with the respect it deserves — and still captures the depth of the moment — you’re in the right place.
The Anand Karaj: What We Capture, How We Move
Arrival at the Gurdwara
The bride and groom arriving separately. Family welcoming. Heads covered, shoes removed. Quiet anticipation before the ceremony begins.
Ardaas & Hukamnama
The opening prayer and the reading of the hukamnama. We position respectfully, capturing the reverence without disrupting it.
The Palla Ceremony
The bride’s father places the palla in the groom’s hand, signifying the giving away. Deeply emotional. We’re framed and ready before the moment.
The Four Laavan
The four phulkas of the Laavan, each walked around the Guru Granth Sahib by the couple. The four hymns sung by the ragis. Each lap carries spiritual weight — we capture without interrupting.
Anand Sahib & Closing Ardaas
The closing prayers. The couple’s hands together, the families gathered behind, the moment of completion.
Karah Prasad & Sangat Blessings
The distribution of karah prasad. The sangat coming forward to bless the couple. The natural movement of family and community.
How We Approach Sikh Wedding Photography
Gurdwara Etiquette is Non-Negotiable
Heads covered. Shoes removed. No shoes carried into the darbar sahib. We never stand higher than the Guru Granth Sahib. We don’t shoot during specific moments where photography would break the ceremony’s sanctity — and we know which moments those are.
We Move Quietly
The Laavan is not a moment for shutter clicks every two seconds. We use silent shutters, we move minimally, we plan our positions in advance so we’re not stepping over family during the ceremony.
We Understand the Spiritual Weight
The Anand Karaj is a religious ceremony, not a photo opportunity. We capture the depth of it precisely because we treat it with that respect.
We Coordinate with the Granthi
Where appropriate, we introduce ourselves to the Granthi before the ceremony, confirming any specific guidance from the Gurdwara about photography during the Laavan or readings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you understand the four Laavan?
Yes. We know each Laavan corresponds to a specific phulka and hymn. We capture each lap with the spiritual significance it carries, without disrupting the ceremony.
Will you respect Gurdwara dress code and protocol?
Always. Heads covered, shoes removed, respectful positioning. This isn’t a checklist — it’s how we work.
Can you photograph during the entire Anand Karaj?
Most Gurdwaras allow photography throughout, but we always confirm with the Granthi beforehand. We never break specific guidance from the Gurdwara about restricted moments.
Do you offer film coverage of the Anand Karaj as well as photography?
Yes. We bring dedicated film and photo teams to ensure cinematic film coverage of the ceremony alongside still photography. Both teams are coordinated to avoid disruption.
How early do you arrive at the Gurdwara?
Typically 90 minutes before the ceremony begins. We capture the arrival, the family preparations, the bride and groom’s separate arrivals, and the lead-in to the Anand Karaj.
